German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned on Monday (June 29, 2026) that the international law-based global order is facing unprecedented pressure and urged a renewed global commitment to cooperation and stronger United Nations (UN) reform. Speaking at the opening of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, Steinmeier stated that the world is entering a period in which long-standing international norms are increasingly under threat. "We live in an era when the international rules that have guided us for decades are under threat—a time when some powerful nations no longer abide by these rules and brazenly violate them when they stand in the way of their own power interests," he said.[1]
Steinmeier stated that global politics is increasingly shaped by "raw power politics, zero-sum thinking, and confrontation," which are undermining what he described as the foundations of a cooperative international system. "A spirit of brutality and cruelty is sweeping through international politics," Steinmeier added. Despite these developments, he emphasized that abandoning multilateral cooperation would be a mistake. "Withdrawing from the United Nations would be a shortsighted and fatal move.
