Swiss national Luzian Andrin Zgraggen (26) has asked the panel of judges to impose the lightest possible sentence in the case concerning the alleged disrespect shown toward Nyepi Day. This request was made in his defense statement or pleidoi after prosecutors demanded a prison term of one year and three months. In his statement, Luzian admitted he did not understand all the rules applicable during Nyepi Day in Bali, including the prohibition against outdoor activity. The foreign national emphasized that he never intended to disrespect Nyepi Day or the Balinese people. "I had heard of Nyepi Day, but I was unaware that leaving the house is not permitted during the observance. I had absolutely no intention of disrespecting Nyepi Day or the Balinese people," he stated before the panel of judges at the Badung District Court on Friday (July 17, 2026).[1]
"At the time, I simply felt hungry, frustrated, and emotional because there was no food available at my accommodation. I also never expected the post to go viral. I deeply regret my actions; I have apologized to the people of Bali and ask the panel of judges to grant me the lightest possible sentence," he added. Luzian explained that the incident occurred while he was vacationing in Bali. He admitted to being upset because he could not get food at his accommodation during Nyepi. Hungry and emotional, he posted a video accompanied by a harsh caption on his personal Instagram account. According to the defendant, the post was not intended to insult Hindus or the Balinese people. He stated that he merely wanted to share his grievance with friends and did not anticipate that the video would spread widely across social media.[2] And if you have any legal issue in Indonesia territory, contact us for business inquiry, feel free in 24 hour, we will be glad to assist you.
