A couple from Sichuan, China, were arguing over 29 chickens during their divorce proceedings. The husband, surnamed "Yang," and his wife, surnamed "Tu," did not have much wealth. Farming was their primary source of income. They owned a total of 53 animals: 29 chickens, 22 geese, and 2 ducks. The geese and ducks were divided equally. However, the chickens were an odd number and became a point of contention between the couple. Tu claimed he had cared for the chickens the most, thus entitled to the extra one. Yang disagreed, feeling she also contributed to the care of the animals.[1]

Judge Chen Qian ultimately proposed two options. First, the excess chicken should be cooked and eaten together before the divorce was officially finalized. Second, the party who received the chicken would have to pay compensation to the other party. Judge Chen stated that this solution was not only practical but also in line with traditional Chinese values. Ultimately, they chose to eat the chicken together as a farewell meal.
