A female employee has been fired from Australia's largest bank after 25 years of service. Ironically, she was replaced by the artificial intelligence (AI) system she had trained. Kathryn Sullivan (63) was dismissed from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) in July, along with 44 other employees. This marked the first time that a layoff was directly linked to the bank's use of AI technology.[1]

Sullivan said he didn't realize his role in scripting and testing responses for the bank's AI chatbot, called 'Bumblebee', would cost him his job. A United States Court of Appeals has declared most of President Donald Trump's global trade tariffs invalid. However, the tariffs remain in effect temporarily, giving Trump the opportunity to pursue a lawsuit all the way to the Supreme Court. The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that Trump had exceeded the authority of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The court noted that the statute grants the president broad powers in the event of a national emergency, but does not include the right to impose tariffs or similar levies.[1]

This ruling upholds a lower court's earlier ruling that declared Trump's tariff policy unlawful. A Thai woman has been jailed for 43 years for criticizing the royal family, the country's harshest sentence for insulting the monarchy. The former civil servant, known only as Anchan, posted an audio clip from a podcast on social media. The 63-year-old said she only shared the audio file and did not comment on its content. Thailand's lèse-majesté law, which prohibits any insult to the monarchy, is among the strictest in the world.[1]

He was initially sentenced to 87 years, but the sentence was halved after he pleaded guilty. Anchan pleaded guilty to 29 separate offenses related to sharing and uploading clips on YouTube and Facebook between 2014 and 2015, his lawyer said. Anchan was among 14 people charged with lèse-majesté shortly after the military junta seized power in 2014 and vowed to stamp out criticism of the monarchy. The group was accused of posting podcasts, popular among dissidents, that questioned the monarchy.[2] The 69-year-old woman was released from prison on Wednesday (August 27, 2025) local time. For nearly two years, between April 2018 and February 2020, Erlinda performed domestic work at Soh's home, including sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning fans, and ironing clothes. Each session lasted three to four hours and took place two to three times a month. She was paid approximately S$375 (approximately IDR 4.7 million) in cash each month. Erlinda temporarily stopped working for Soh in February 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions on the number of household visitors. She resumed working for Soh from March 2022 to September 2024 after Covid-19 had subsided. Erlinda did not have a valid work permit to work part-time for Soh. Although Soh knew Erlinda was employed by someone else as a foreign domestic worker, he hired her out of necessity.[1]

Regulations for migrant domestic workers (ART) in Singapore are very strict. Those who work part-time outside their official employer will be subject to fines of up to hundreds of millions of rupiah. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) began an investigation into this case in December 2024 after receiving information about a possible violation of the Foreign Employment Act. After being tried in court, Soh, a Singaporean citizen, was fined S$7,000 (approximately IDR 88 million) by the court. Meanwhile, his migrant worker, Erlinda, was fined S$13,000 (approximately IDR 165 million).
