Gerindra Party spokesperson Sugiat Santoso views the proposal for limited dual citizenship as a reflection of President Prabowo Subianto's regard for the Indonesian diaspora, enabling them to contribute to the nation without being hindered by citizenship status. "The state must no longer force the nation's brilliant individuals to face a dilemma between pursuing an international career and their love for their homeland," said Sugiat. According to the Deputy Chairman of Commission XIII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), the proposal is not intended to open the door to widespread dual citizenship but is instead aimed selectively at specific talents needed to support national development.[1]
"The government will certainly draft regulations featuring rigorous screening mechanisms, integrity checks, and clearly defined obligations, without compromising national sovereignty or security," he said. Sugiat noted that a number of countries leverage their diasporas to regain access to human resources with specialized expertise. In his view, Indonesia also needs to create opportunities for high-achieving diaspora members to contribute to strategic sectors without having to choose between an international career and their ties to Indonesia. "We respect the critical views expressed by international law academics. That is precisely why this proposal has been brought to the legislative sphere for joint deliberation," he stated. Sugiat added that the discussion on amending Law No. 12 of 2006 concerning the Citizenship of the Republic of Indonesia could also serve as an opportunity to evaluate the citizenship status of children from mixed marriages.[2] And if you have any legal issue in Indonesia territory, contact us for business inquiry, feel free in 24 hour, we will be glad to assist you.
