Indonesian President Urges ASEAN Leaders to Unite to Uphold International Law

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called on Southeast Asian leaders to encourage the enforcement of international law against any violations that occur amidst regional conflicts, particularly in the Middle East. This was conveyed by Prabowo while attending the plenary session of the ASEAN Summit held at the Mactan Expo, Cebu, Philippines, Friday (May 8, 2026). In his speech, Prabowo highlighted the importance of protecting ASEAN citizens in the Middle East conflict area. According to him, many ASEAN countries have thousands of citizens working or living in the region. "Finally, the safety and welfare of our citizens in the Middle East demands our full attention. I think many of our countries have thousands of citizens there," said Prabowo.[1]

He emphasized that protecting citizens must be a top priority for ASEAN countries. "Protecting citizens must remain a top priority. I welcome Singapore's offer to cooperate with other countries if we need to evacuate our citizens," he said. Prabowo said that ASEAN needs to have a collective approach in dealing with the impact of global conflict on the region. "I think we must have a collective ASEAN approach. Indonesia is willing to work very closely with our colleagues in ASEAN," he said. He also mentioned the deaths of Indonesian soldiers serving in United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions.
