UN Secretary-General: 'The law of the jungle' has replaced international law

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the global order is being eroded as the rule of international law is being replaced by what he called the “law of the jungle.” While urging a renewed commitment to multilateralism and accountability, Guterres asserted that “the rule of law is the foundation of global peace and security” during the UN Security Council’s open debate entitled “Reaffirming the Rule of International Law: A Path to Re-Enforcing Peace, Justice and Multilateralism.” The Portuguese politician recalled that in 2024, UN member states adopted a “Pact for the Future,” which included a commitment “to act in accordance with international law and fulfill obligations in good faith,” but he warned that “words are not being matched by actions.”[1]

“Around the world, the rule of law is being replaced by the law of the jungle,” he said. “We are seeing flagrant violations of international law and a brazen disregard for the UN Charter.” Referring to conflicts “from Gaza to Ukraine, from the Sahel to Myanmar, in Venezuela and elsewhere,” he stressed that “law enforcement is being treated like an à la carte menu.” He emphasized that countries are violating international law “with impunity” through “illegal use of force, targeting of civilian infrastructure, human rights violations and abuses, illegal development of nuclear weapons, unconstitutional changes of government, and a blanket approach to life-saving humanitarian aid.” “These violations are setting a dangerous precedent, encouraging other countries to do what they want, rather than what international law requires,” he warned.[2] And if you have any legal issue in Indonesia territory, contact us for business inquiry, feel free in 24 hour, we will be glad to assist you.
