US Charges Chinese Citizen in Chip Smuggling Case

Two Chinese nationals were arrested in the United States (US). Chuan Geng and Shiwei Yang (both 28) were arrested for smuggling tens of millions of dollars worth of AI chips into China. The smuggling of advanced chips has become a growing concern in Washington. At least US$1 billion (IDR 16 trillion) worth of Nvidia chips entered China after Donald Trump tightened chip export controls earlier this year.[1]

The two Chinese nationals arrested are said to have smuggled US chips into China between October 2022 and July 2025. The shipments were made without a license. The two individuals founded ALX Solutions in California shortly after the chip controls first came into effect. Law enforcement also searched their offices and seized their phones. Communications incriminating the two defendants were found.
