It has been reported that a farmer in the Madiun area of ​​East Java, Darwato, has been detained by authorities. Darwanto, found himself in trouble with the law after rescuing two Javan porcupines and raising them until they grew to six. Darwanto's fate is currently in the hands of a panel of judges at the Madiun District Court. Furthermore, the porcupines Darwanto kept were Javan porcupines, which are classified as protected species. Regulations state that anyone is prohibited from capturing, keeping, possessing, raising, or trading protected species without official permission. Darwanto stated that he kept porcupines because he considered them pests that damaged his garden crops. He admitted that he was unaware that keeping Javan porcupines would lead to legal action.
